Cambridge Tree Locator: Ca-Co

Links in the third column are to maps displaying tree locations. Links in brackets are to  Multimap ; normal links are to specific Cambridge tree maps, the second column containing the abbreviation(s) used for the tree on the map.

Calocedrus decurrens  (Incense Cedar) There is one by Trumpington Street in Little St Mary's Churchyard [map]; there are also a clump of three (or a tree with three leaders) in Christ's College, just visible behind the wall at the NW corner of Christ's Pieces
Carpinus betulus  (Common Hornbeam)HoThere are a couple of type trees to the W of Jesus Lock Footbridge, across the river from Jesus Green; the fastigiate form ‘Fastigiata’ is common as a street tree, e.g. the two fine trees at the junction of Victoria Park with Victoria Road [map]
Castanea sativa  (Sweet Chestnut) Sweet Chestnuts don't like Cambridge chalk, but there are some large trees out at Histon at the NE corner of The Coppice [map] (on the Upper Greensand here!)
Catalpa bignonioides  (Indian Bean)IBTwo medium-sized trees, one at either end of Christ's Pieces; others in Wulfstan Way near the junction with Cherry Hinton Road [map], and outside Tesco's in Campkin Road [map]
Cedrus atlantica  (Atlas Cedar) Young bluish (f.glauca) trees are easy to identify; older, greener trees are hard to separate from C.libani. There are young blue trees at the entrance to the Science Park [map] and at the SE corner of Robinson College on Grange Road [map]. The tree beside Castle Mound appears to be C.atlantica [map]. There are huge specimens of all three Cedrus species in the Botanic Gardens, all looking (to my eyes) very similar!
Cedrus deodara  (Deodar) A common garden tree; there is a fairly large one on the inside of the bend in Water Lane, Chesterton [map]; also at the NE corner of West Road Concert Hall [map]; there is a fine ‘Aurea’ on the S side of Courtney Way off Gilbert Road [map]; one or two of the younger garden trees appear to be the weeping ‘Pendula’ form
Cedrus libani  (Cedar of Lebanon) Can be hard to separate from C.atlantica, but the large tree in Brookside [map] is C.libani
Cercidiphyllum japonicum  (Katsura) A single small tree in a garden on the N side of Humberstone Road [map]
Cercis siliquastrum  (Judas Tree)JuFairly common in gardens; three young trees on the N side of the swimming pool across from Parker's Piece; a larger tree at the N edge of Lammas Land
Chamaecyparis lawsoniana  (Lawson's Cypress)LCA very common tree: there are fair-sized examples in the middle of Alexandra Gardens and near the centre of Histon Road Cemetery; cultivars are also common, although they are hard to specify with confidence, except for the very distinctive ‘Wisselii’, of which there is an example on the E side of Hurst Park Avenue, near the N end [map]
Chamaecyparis obtusa  (Hinoki Cypress)HinOnly represented by its cultivars: two small trees near the N end of Alexandra Gardens appear to be ‘Crippsii’
Chamaecyparis pisifera  (Sawara Cypress) The ‘Squarrosa’ cultivar is widespread
Cordyline australis  (Cabbage Palm) Common in gardens: four largish trees on the E side of Brookside, towards the N end [map]
Cornus kousa  (Strawberry Dogwood) One in Fen Ditton, 50m up the lane at the end of the footpath from Cambridge [map]
Cornus mas  (Cornelian Cherry)CCQuite common in gardens but only obvious when flowering; two small trees lurking in the W corner of Alexandra Gardens
Cornus sanguinea  (Common Dogwood)DgCommon near water: there are several near the S tip of Sheep's Green
Cornus avellana  (Common Hazel) One at the S corner of Emmanuel College, by St Andrews Street [map]; some gardens have Corkscrew Hazels (‘Contorta’) - there is a mature one at the W corner of the junction of Brimley Road and Redfern Close [map]
Cornus colurna  (Turkish Hazel) A neatly-shaped street tree: a row on the E side of Garlic Row S of its junction with Mercer's Row [map]; two largish trees in the recreation ground by Cam Causeway [map]
Corylus maxima  (Filbert) Beside the Hazel at the S corner of Emmanuel College on St Andrews Street [map]
Cotinus coggygria  (Smoke-bush)SmAn example of the scarcer type tree in front of Sherlock Court on Sherlock Road [map]; purple forms common in gardens, also at the N edge of Christ's Pieces
