Trees of Histon Road Cemetery, Cambridge
Histon Road Cemetery, opened in 1843, was one of the earliest of the new independent (i.e. mainly non-conformist) cemeteries that came into being in the early Victorian era as city populations increased rapidly and church and chapel burial grounds overflowed. It retains much of its formal (and rather sombre) layout, the central oval originally containing a chapel of rest. As well as the traditional Yews [Y] and Irish Yews [IY], there are some large evergreen Holm Oaks [HO] (some marked on the map have been felled recently) and mature examples of both the type Oriental Thuja [OT] and its ‘Elegantissima’ [OTE] cultivar.
