Cotinus coggygria — Smoke-bush
A bushy tree from Asia introduced in the mid-17th century. The type is rare, but purple forms are very common.
The alternate leaves are untoothed and oval. The tiny flowers form huge heads like clouds of smoke.
f. purpureus has purple flowers; cultivars such as ‘Notcutt's Variety’ and ‘Royal Purple’ have purple leaves as well.
