Chamaecyparis obtusa — Hinoki Cypress
Introduced from Japan in mid-Victorian times. The type tree is infrequent, but many of the cultivars are common.
The type tree does not have drooping foliage, and the leaves are neater, the blunt side-leaves not projecting at all. The leaves have a sweet, eucalyptus smell when crushed.
Cultivars include the yellow ‘Crippsii’, the yellow ‘Tetragona Aurea’ with congested foliage, and the rounded ‘Nana Gracilis’ with bright, crisp, fan-shaped foliage.
