Notes:  Wales boasted a very early railway line in the Hereford-Abergavenny route, but other early lines in Wales were mainly built to get to Ireland (Holyhead) or across the Atlantic (Nayland in Pembrokeshire). Later on a more complete network of routes developed, of which only a few remain today.
