Salix capraea — Goat Willow
A common native bushy tree.
The alternate leaves are broad and neatly ovoid, but with the tip twisted sideways. The buds are chunky for a willow. The catkins (‘pussies’), which appear in early spring before the leaves, are silvery (when unopened) on female trees and golden on male trees.
Male and female grafted weeping forms are common.
Natural hybrids with Grey Sallow are frequent.
