Populus x canadensis — Hybrid Black Poplar
A series of very common, vigorous, hybrids between Wild Black Poplar and Eastern Cottonwood (P.deltoides, from America) produced from the mid-18th century onwards.
The crown is more open than that of the native Wild Black Poplar, and the alternate leaves are usually larger, and with small knobbly glands at the leaf base. The buds are sharp and narrow.
There are a huge number of cultivars: ‘Robusta’ is dominant in plantations; many older trees are collectively classed as ‘Railway Poplars’. A golden form ‘Serotina Aurea’ (Golden Poplar) is sometimes seen.
