History of the UK Rail Network — London

Notes:  The history of London's lines is complex, but in sharp contradistinction with most of the rest of Britain, very few of the lines that were built have subsequently been closed. This is largely because most of the suburban lines were speculative, built through areas not served by any existing line (and therefore not suffering from competition); the opening of each line usually stimulated house-building nearby, and most lines become reasonably profitable commuter routes thereafter.
