Notes:  The Liverpool & Manchester Railway provided a nucleus for the development of connecting lines, first north and south by connection with the Birmingham-Warrington-Carlisle and then to both sides of the Pennines. The intense competition between rival companies left a legacy of complex and redundant lines in and around many of the big cities, and consequently in some places, particularly Manchester, modern routes are derived from sections of many different original lines.
