Tilia platyphyllos — Broad-leaved Lime
A rare native tree, widely planted but often easily mistaken for Common Lime.
Mature trees are broad and flat-topped. The alternate leaves are on the large side, and tend to droop at the edges, reminiscent of hazel. The leaf undersides are softly hairy. The buds have three scales. The hanging flowers, which open significantly before those of Common Lime, give rise to strongly-ribbed fruit.
