Thuja plicata — Western Red Cedar
A very common mid-19th century introduction from America, also widely used for hedging.
The shiny sprays have rather broader and more separated threads than those of Lawson's Cypress, and the leaves have whitish marks on their undersides and a synthetic orange smell when crushed. The cones ripen brown.
‘Zebrina’ is a common variegated form with zebra-like yellow bands.
