Quercus robur — English Oak

An abundant native tree, particularly in the south.

The alternate leaves have characteristic rounded lobes and small lobes (‘auricles’) at the base. The leaf-stalks are very short. The buds are rounded and scaled, and clustered at the ends of shoots. Yellow catkins are produced at leaf emergence. The acorns have long stalks.

f. fastigiata (Cypress Oak) is a fastigiate form sometimes planted as a street tree.
