Quercus coccinea — Scarlet Oak
An uncommon late-17th century introduction from America, seen more often as its ‘Splendens’ cultivar.
The alternate leaves have whisker-tipped lobes which look as though they have been badly cut out with scissors. ‘Splendens’ in particular reliably turns bright red in autumn. Buds are small and slightly hairy. The acorns are rather squat.
