Prunus padus — Bird Cherry

A common native tree.

The alternate leaves are finely toothed. The bark is smooth and dark grey. The shoots have prominent pale lenticels and the buds are pointed. The flowers open in the latter part of spring in stiff tails spraying out at all angles, and give rise to small black cherries.

‘Watereri’ is the most common garden form, with longer flower tails.

‘Colorata’ is an uncommon cultivar with pink flowers and red-tinged foliage.
