Pinus nigra — Austrian/Corsican Pine
Introduced in the 18th and 19th centuries, ssp. laricio (Corsican Pine) is very common in forestry plantations, whereas ssp. nigra (Austrian Pine) is more common in gardens and parks.
ssp. laricio usually forms a tall tree with a dominant single trunk. Its paired needles are quite long. Cones are on the small side (but larger than those of Scots Pine).
ssp. nigra is less straight and often heavy-limbed, and its needles are shorter.
