Crataegus persimilis — (Broad-leaved Cockspur Thorn)

The cultivar ‘Prunifolia’ is a common park and street tree, a late-18th century selection from a North American thorn.

The leaves are oval and shiny and turn brilliant red in autumn. The buds are small and hairless and the shoots brown, with substantial thorns. The haws are bright red, a little larger than those of Common Hawthorn.
