Aesculus x carnea — Red Horse Chestnut
A common early-19th century cross between Horse Chestnut and Red Buckeye (Aesculus pavia).
The leaves usually have five unstalked leaflets, crinkled and rather stubby compared with Horse Chestnut. The buds are not sticky. The flowers are red and in short candles. The fruit ripens brown and has fewer spines than Horse Chestnut.
‘Briotii’ is widely planted, as it has brighter flowers than the type.
