2.1: Celebrating the Shebajie Festival (Part 1)

Peng Wugen, Dianfang Township, Longshan County
recorded on 20 July 2002

This text represents the first 10% of a mammoth 75-minute account of the economic and cultural life of the Tujia. Mr Peng describes the annual Spring shebajie festival, which is centred round the baishouwu (literally 'hand-waving') dance. The story is continued in the next text. Note the relatively high frequency of Chinese loan words used in this text, even by such a fluent Tujia speaker.
