The Tujia settled in the limestone country to the south of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, attracted by the inaccessibility of its deeply-scored and eroded plateau. The eroded karst topography is responsible for the very high density of large-scale cave systems in this area. This is one of the larger caves among several within a one mile radius of Qixin village of Tasha rural township in Longshan County. Once a hideout for tufei bandits, or for farmers fleeing the bandits' nocturnal depredations, this cave is now a popular cool spot for local children in hot weather.
