In winter after work is over for the day, life centres around the fireplace in the kitchen cum living room. Men smoke long-stemmed pipes, women nurse children, and conversation flows. The arrival of electricity, however, has meant that more and more families are clustering round the television set in the evenings instead of chatting by the fire.
